John Francis Erskine Goodeve-Erskine was born in Clifton on 29 March 1836. He succeeded his uncle to the Earldom in 1866. His uncle was John Francis Miller Erskine, 32nd Earl of Mar (1795-1866) who had also established a right to the Earldom of Kellie. John Francis Erskine Goodeve-Erskine was the Representative Peer for Scotland 1886 to 1923. He held honorary degrees from Oxford and Cambridge.
